Using Shopify Flow with Split Payment

Automate payment reminders, invoices, and balance collection with Split Payment triggers and actions in Shopify Flow

Written by Andrey Gadashevich

Shopify Flow is Shopify's free automation app. It lets you build workflows in a simple "when this happens, do that" format, without writing any code.

Split Payment & Deposit connects to Shopify Flow, so the payment events on your partial payment orders can start an automation in your store. You can remind customers before a payment is due, send an invoice when the due date arrives, collect the remaining balance from the card on file, and get notified the moment a collection attempt fails.

The integration is available to all merchants on all Split Payment plans.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • The Split Payment & Deposit app installed, with at least one deposit or installment purchase option in use.

  • The Shopify Flow app installed in the same store. It's free and published by Shopify.

1. Install Shopify Flow

  1. In the Split Payment app, open Integrations in the left navigation menu.

  2. Find the Shopify Flow card and click Get app. The Shopify Flow listing opens in the Shopify App Store in a new tab.

  3. Click Install and confirm.

There's nothing to connect or authorize afterwards. Once both apps are installed, the Split Payment triggers and actions appear in Shopify Flow automatically, listed under the app's name.

2. Split Payment triggers

A trigger is the event that starts a workflow. When you create a workflow in Flow, click Select a trigger and look for the Split Payment triggers. Each one passes order and payment data into the workflow, which you can use in conditions and in the text of your emails.

All triggers fire only for orders placed with a Split Payment purchase option.

Payment collection failure

Deposit orders. Fires when an attempt to collect a payment on a Split Payment order fails.

Data: order_id, order_name, customer_email, payment_amount, currency, failure_reason, due_date.

Use it when you're collecting the remaining payment automatically and want to act if the charge doesn't go through. failure_reason tells you why the payment failed, so you can add a condition on it and respond differently depending on the cause.

Payment collection success

All order types. Fires when a payment on a Split Payment order is collected successfully.

Data: order_id, order_name, customer_email, payment_amount, currency, payment_type, payment_number, remaining_balance, order_financial_status.

If you only want the workflow to run when the final balance is collected — rather than on every installment — add a condition for order_financial_status is paid.

Payment due — daily ticker

All order types. Fires once a day for every Split Payment order, from the day after it's created until 30 days after its due date.

Data: order_id, order_name, customer_email, payment_amount, currency, due_date, days_until_due_date, payment_type.

Use this when the fixed reminder triggers below don't match the timing you want. Add the trigger to a workflow, add a condition on days_until_due_date, and set how many days before the due date the workflow should run. From there, take any action you need — send an invoice, notify your team, or anything else.

Payment due today, and 24 hours / 48 hours / 4 days / 7 days before

All order types. Five separate triggers that fire on the day a payment is due, or the set amount of time before it. They only fire if the order isn't fully paid yet.

Data: order_id, order_name, customer_email, payment_amount, currency, due_date, payment_type.

Use them to remind customers ahead of the due date, send an invoice on the day, or start collecting the balance automatically.

Note: the due-date triggers and the daily ticker start firing the day after an order is created. For an order created on May 1, they fire from May 2 at the earliest — so they won't run on an order whose due date is the same day it was placed.

3. Split Payment actions

An action is what the workflow does. Add these from the Actions menu in Flow, and combine them freely with Shopify's own actions and conditions.

  • Collect remaining payment (deposit orders) — charges the outstanding balance to the card on file. Works on deposit orders that still have a balance and a valid saved payment method.

  • Send payment method update email (deposit orders) — emails the customer a direct link to Shopify's payment method update form. Pair this with the payment collection failure trigger.

  • Update the order due date (all order types) — sets a new due date on an open order with a remaining balance. The date uses the ISO 8601 format, for example 2026-09-15. Handy when something outside the app changes the timeline, like a fulfilment delay. A due date passing doesn't stop you collecting payment later.

  • Send payment invoice (installment orders) — emails the customer an invoice for their next outstanding installment.

Split Payment actions only affect orders placed with a Split Payment purchase option. If a workflow runs an action on any other order, nothing happens and no error is returned — so it's safe to apply a workflow broadly to all your orders.

4. Start from a template

You don't have to build from scratch. Split Payment publishes ready-made workflows in the Shopify Flow template library — open Templates in Flow and look for the ones listed under Split Payment. Install one, then customize it however you like.

  • Send balance invoice and notify team when payment collection fails — emails the customer an invoice for the outstanding balance and alerts your team, so a failed charge never goes unnoticed.

  • Send payment reminder 24 hours before due date — a reminder the day before the balance is due. Swap the trigger for the 48 hours, 4 days, or 7 days version if you'd rather give more notice.

  • Send balance invoice when payment is due — sends the invoice for the outstanding balance on the due date itself.

  • Collect outstanding balance payment when payment due date is reached — charges the card on file automatically when the due date arrives.

  • Send payment reminder 1 day before attempting payment collection — warns the customer that the card on file will be charged tomorrow, waits a day, then collects.

  • Send reminders 7 days and 1 day before due date — a two-step reminder sequence built on the daily ticker.

5. Build your own workflow

Here's the most common example: remind the customer the day before their balance is due.

  1. Open the Shopify Flow app and click Create workflow.

  2. Click Select a trigger and choose Split Payment's Payment due in 24 hours.

  3. Optionally click + and add a Condition — for example, only run for orders above a certain total.

  4. Add the Shopify Send order invoice action, and write your reminder message.

  5. Name the workflow and click Turn on workflow.

Note: Shopify's Send payment reminder action doesn't work with Split Payment orders. Use Send order invoice with a custom message instead. You can edit the invoice wording in your Shopify admin under Settings → Notifications → Customer notifications.

Word the message to match what happens next: if you're collecting the balance automatically, tell the customer their card will be charged. If you're expecting them to pay the invoice themselves, ask them to.

What this first release covers

This is the first version of the Shopify Flow integration, and it's built around two things: reminding customers before a payment is due, and reacting when a collection attempt fails. A couple of boundaries are worth knowing before you plan your workflows.

  • Follow-up after the due date. The triggers above are designed for the run-up to the due date and the day itself. There's no dedicated "payment overdue" trigger yet. In the meantime, the app's own payment reminder emails still go out for overdue payments, independently of Flow — check your notification settings in Split Payment to see how they're configured.

  • Failed installment payments. The payment collection failure trigger applies to deposit orders. If you're running installments and want to automate what happens when a payment doesn't come in, get in touch and we'll look at your setup with you.

If there's an automation you need and you can't see how to build it with the triggers and actions above, message us. We can often suggest a workaround, and what merchants ask for shapes what we add next.

Good to know

  • Workflows only run while they're turned on, and only for orders created after that point.

  • You can check every run, and whether it succeeded, on the workflow's run log in Flow.

  • Flow's workflow preview doesn't execute Split Payment actions. You can check your logic and data in preview, but no real payment is taken or invoice sent.

  • Flow doesn't replace the app's own emails. If you build reminders in Flow, review your notification settings in Split Payment so customers don't receive two of everything.

  • Partial payments require Shopify Payments or PayPal Express. See the Shopify requirements.
