Setting up multiple or shared (group) payments

Let your customers split a single order payment among a few people

Written by Andrey Gadashevich

Let your shoppers split a single order by sharing the total among several people. The initiator can add recipient emails and send invitations so each person pays their own part.

How to set up shared (group) payments?

1. Enable the "Multiple payments, Shared payments"

On your Shopify dashboard, go to Split payments β†’ enable the toggle for "Multiple payments, Shared payments".

2. Choose payment options to enable

On the editor page you have 2 options for the split payments:

  1. displaying either multiple or shared payment option

  2. displaying both of the split payment options on the same popup

From the type section. Choose which split payment method(s) to offer your customers.

When both options are enabled, the popup displays two tabs β€” Multiple Payment and Shared Payment β€” so customers can choose their preferred method.

Multiple Payments

Check Multiple payments to let customers split a single order across several payment methods β€” for example, two different credit cards, or a card and PayPal.

When enabled, customers will see the Multiple Payment tab in the popup at checkout. They can divide the order total into as many payments as needed by clicking + Add Payment.

Shared Payments

Check Shared payments to let customers split an order between multiple people. The customer enters email addresses for each participant, and invoices are sent to all of them automatically.

πŸ‘‰ An additional option appears when Shared payments is enabled:

Allow your customers to send invoices to recipients, while not paying for themselves β€” Enable this if you want to allow the primary customer to forward the full payment to others without contributing a payment themselves.

3. Set the payment details settings

The Texts section lets you configure order tags and deadlines for each payment type.

If you've enabled the both payment options, each of their related configurations will be here:

Multiple payment order tag β€” The tag automatically applied to orders placed via multiple payments. Default: multiple-payment.

Multiple payment deadline β€” The time window within which all payment parts must be completed. Default: 2 Days.

Shared payment order tag β€” The tag applied to orders placed via shared payments. Default: shared-payment. This allows you to easily filter these orders in your Shopify admin (Split payment β†’ Orders).

Shared payment deadline β€” The time window for all participants to complete their payments. Default: 1 Week.

Tag for partial orders β€” Optional. Add a tag to be applied to intermediate (partial) orders. Useful if you want to exclude these from auto-fulfillment workflows.

Checkout discount title β€” The label shown on the checkout page as a discount line item when split payment is applied. Default: SPLIT PAYMENT. This appears on the Shopify checkout summary to indicate that part of the total has already been covered.

Additional Settings

Copy width of 'Checkout' button β€” When checked, the Split Payment button matches the width of your store's Checkout button for a consistent look.

Copy height and vertical margin of chosen element β€” Enable this to also match the height and spacing of the element you've selected for button placement.
