Setting up installment payments

Let your customers divide the total cost of a product into scheduled payments

Installment payments allow you to offer your customers divide the total cost of a product into smaller, scheduled payments made over a set period of time.

Step-by-step guide to Set Up Installment Payments in your Shopify store

1. Create deferred payment

On your Shopify dashboard, click on Create deferred payment option payments.

​From the "Types" section, select the Installment payments.

A preview will appear showing how the installment option will display to customers.

2. Select products or collections

Choose where installment payments apply to:

  • All products

  • Specific collections

  • Specific products

If you select specific collections or products, browse the products or collections and select them.

ℹ️ Note: If the same product is included in multiple purchase options, the most recently created option will apply.

3. Set payment details

From the Offer section, set installment payment details

  • For the initial payment, define the percentage or a fixed amount a customer pays at checkout.

  • For the quantity of remaining payments, set how many payments remain after the initial payment.

  • And for the payment frequency (payment every): Decide how often payments are made (e.g., every 30 days, every 2 weeks).

4. Set Display options

Full Payment Option

Under Display options, you can control whether customers see a full payment alternative alongside the installment plan.

Give customers the option to pay in full — Check this box to show a "Pay in full" option on the product page alongside the installment widget. When enabled, a second checkbox appears:

'Full payment' option selected by default — Check this to pre-select full payment as the default choice. Customers can still switch to the installment plan manually.

When to Display the Installment Payments Widget

Choose when the widget appears on product pages:

  • Always — The widget is shown regardless of stock status.

  • When product is out of stock — The widget appears only when a product is unavailable. Note: for this option to work, you must enable "Continue selling when out of stock" in your Shopify admin for the relevant products.

  • Only when product is in stock — The widget is shown only when the product is available to purchase.

Customers

Control which customers see the installment widget:

  • All customers — The widget is visible to everyone. You can optionally check Exclude B2B customers to hide it from wholesale/B2B accounts.

  • Specific customer tags — Show or hide the widget based on customer tags. Once selected, choose whether to include or exclude customers with those tags, then search or create the relevant tags in the field provided.

  • Specific customer segments — Limit visibility to a defined customer segment from your Shopify admin. Once selected, choose whether to include or exclude customers with those segments

5. Texts (Checkout payment labels at checkout)

In this section, you can add order tags that appear in your Shopify admin (to distinguish orders coming form installments) and customize texts that appear on the cart and checkout pages.

6. Offer discounts for installment payments

Here, you can allow discount codes, this is optional. Here, you can enable customers to use discount codes when paying in installments.

7. Enable installment badge

Next, you can enable enable installment badge to display that payment with installments is available. Once enabled, you can customize the colors, placement - bottom left/right, top - left/right, and texts and preview the changes from the preview window.

8. Enable payment reminders

Finally, you can enable payment reminders. Once clicked, you can set the date:

The reminder email is fully customizable — edit the subject line and body from Settings → Notifications → Deferred payments → Payment reminder.

Customization

To customize the look and text of the widget, click on the Design page under the preview window. This will take you to the design settings.

Or, after you save the offer, you can also click on the Design page under the app pages:
