Setting up deposit payments

Allow your shoppers to pay upfront deposit payment

Deposit payments allow you to offer your customers to pay an upfront deposit to purchase a product, with the remaining amount charged automatically at a later time.

Note: For showing deposit payment widgets in your store, make sure your payment gateway settings to comply with Shopify's requirements

Step-by-step guide to Set Up Deposit Payments in your Shopify store

1. Create deferred payment

On your Shopify dashboard, click on Create deferred payment option payments.

On the editor, tick the box “Deposit payments” type form the Types section:

A preview will show how the deposit option will display to shoppers.


2. Select products or collections​

Choose where deposit payment apply to:

  • All products

  • Specific collections

  • Specific products

If you select specific collections or products, browse the products or collections and select them.


​3. Configure deposit offer

From the Offer section, configure deposit offer:

  • For Initial Payment, enter the percentage of the product price customers must pay upfront (e.g., 50%).

Under the Payment schedule for the second payment, select:

  • Days after checkout — charge after a set number of days

  • On a specific date — charge on a fixed calendar date

  • On order fulfillment (new) — charge when the order is marked as fulfilled

4. Set Display options

Full Payment Option

Under Display options, you can control whether customers see a full payment alternative alongside the deposit payment.

Give customers the option to pay in full — Check this box to show a "Pay in full" option on the product page alongside the deposit widget.

When to Display the Deposit Payments Widget

Choose when the widget appears on product pages:

  • Always — The widget is shown regardless of stock status.

  • When product is out of stock — The widget appears only when a product is unavailable. Note: for this option to work, you must enable "Continue selling when out of stock" in your Shopify admin for the relevant products.

  • Only when product is in stock — The widget is shown only when the product is available to purchase.

Customers

Control which customers see the deposit payment option:

  • All customers — The widget is visible to everyone. You can optionally check Exclude B2B customers to hide it from wholesale/B2B accounts.

  • Specific customer tags — Show or hide the widget based on customer tags. Once selected, choose whether to include or exclude customers with those tags, then search or create the relevant tags in the field provided.

  • Specific customer segments — Limit visibility to a defined customer segment from your Shopify admin. Once selected, choose whether to include or exclude customers with those segments

5. Texts (Cart labels)

In this section, you can add order tags that appear in your Shopify admin (to distinguish orders coming from deposits) and customize texts that appear on the cart.

6. Deposit badge

Optionally, you can enable deposit badge to be visible on the product images on the collection page. Tick the box to enable the Deposit badge for product image.

7. Set reminders

Finally, you can enable payment reminders. Once clicked, you can set the date:

Customization

To customize the look and text of the widget, click on the Design page under the preview window. This will take you to the design settings.

Or, after you save the offer, you can also click on the Design page under the app pages:

Here, you can customize the colors and translation texts:

The reminder email is fully customizable — edit the subject line and body from Settings → Notifications → Deferred payments → Payment reminder.
